Patchwork America

I thought I would include you in a new quilt idea from beginning idea phase to, hopefully, the finished quilt.  My idea is to use 1.5" finished blocks to piece all the states, each in a different color.  I plan to use all fifty of the solid American Made Brands cottons.  I think I want to piece the background, too, to maintain the patchwork feel.  At 1.5" for the blocks, this should turn out to be a twin sized quilt.  I think this shouldn't be too hard, just time consuming.  I will number all the colors and print out a graph, so that I know which colored squares to sew in the rows.  I think I will work on some of the shapes of the states, but this is not intended for navigational purposes, so I think it will be fine.  Jerilynn

  1. I always knew my relatives in Kansas were one block shy of a rectangle!

  2. Kansas is okay, but a lot of the other blocks look nothing like the states they represent. I wonder if there is a way to fix that.

  3. I am already three revisions past this initial picture I posted. I thought it would be fun to blog about the "journey" this quilt will take. Because I am forcing the states to made with little square blocks, some liberty will be taken. I sure hope the final quilt will look something like the USA!

  5. It's wonderful as an artistic visual representation of the states! If I want realism, I can always whip out my Rand McNalleys, copy pages and fussy cut all the states. Ummm...let me think. Oh, ok, I chose artistry and squares. Great job, as usual, Jerilynn. Looking forward to following you on this journey.
